"This vehicle is the first of its kind in India. It is a positive step in the collection and management of E-WASTE"
Last year SANKALAN was GO GREEN !!!
So with the right energy and spirits, we followed the green drive...
This year we have come up with a new concept of collecting e-waste in association with NOKIA...
The ANNUAL TECHNICAL FEST, SANKALAN is to be held on 5th AND 6th MARCH...
Join us in this drive and drop your mobile handsets and other mobile accessories in the recycling bin placed in the campus.
The ANNUAL TECHNICAL FEST, SANKALAN is to be held on 5th AND 6th MARCH...
Join us in this drive and drop your mobile handsets and other mobile accessories in the recycling bin placed in the campus.
- For every 5 or more handsets, in a T-shirt.
- For 2-4 handsets, win a cool cap
- For 1 handset, win yourself pen set made from recycled plastic.
E-WASTE CONVERTOZZ!!
PUT ON YOUR THINKING CAPS AND DESIGN SOMETHING INNOVATIVE AND USEFUL USING E-WASTE MATERIALS LYING UN-UTILIZED IN YOUR HOME OR INSTITUTE.
RULES:
- THE EVENT IS OPEN FOR ALL.
- TEAM SIZE : ATMOST 2.
- THE MODEL ALONG WITH THE CONCEPT SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ON DAY 1 (i.e 5th MARCH,2011) BEFORE 12 noon.
- SUBMISSION INCLUDES THE MODEL AND ONE PAGE WRITE UP THAT INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:
- A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE DESIGNED MODEL
- E-WASTE MATERIALS USED IN MAKING THE MODEL
- SOURCE OF THE E-WASTE MATERIALS.
- THE JUDGMENT WILL BE ON THE BASIS OF FOLLOWING PARAMETERS:
- MAXIMUM UTILIZATION OF E-WASTE MATERIALS
- CONCEPT
- DESIGN
- DECISION OF JUDGES WILL BE FINAL.
- ALL SUBMITTED ENTRIES WILL BELONG TO SANKALAN 2011 AND WILL BE GIVEN FOR RECYCLING TO I-DREAM.
- EXTRA POINTS WILL BE AWARDED IF THE MODEL CONTAINS MOBILE HANDSET.
Some of the very basic steps taken by us to promote a green future were as follows :-
- No brochures were sent to colleges along with the invitation document. Instead, all the relevant details were provided on a single sheet of paper with both sides printing.
- The idea of both side printing was maintained for all modes of communication with the participating teams during the event. This also included questionnaires and instructions for preliminary and main events.
- Each participant was provided with a single notebook/notepad with the registration kit. No other paper was provided to any participant for rough work or any other purpose whatsoever during the event.
- The invitation card sent to all faculty members was handmade and was designed on a recycled paper.
- Laptops were used throughout the event as they consume less energy compared to a desktop computers.
- All the waste paper collected during the event was sent for recycling..
This year SANKALAN has its focus towards finding a solution to a domain which is growing wider and disastrous for the environment: ELECTRONIC WASTE !!
E-WASTE OR E-SCRAP??
Electronic waste, popularly known as ‘e-waste’ can be defined as electronic equipments / products connects with power plug, batteries which have become obsolete due to:
- Advancement in technology
- Changes in fashion, style and status
- Nearing the end of their useful life.
Electronic products often contain hazardous and toxic materials that pose environmental risks if they are land filled or incinerated.
E-waste encompasses ever growing range of obsolete electronic devices such as :
- Computers, Servers, Main Frames, Monitors, TVs & Display devices
- Telecommunication devices such as Cellular phones & Pagers, Calculators, Audio and Video devices
- Printers, Scanners, Copiers and Fax machines
- Recording devices such as DVDs, CDs, Floppies, Tapes, Printing Cartridges
- Electronic components such as Chips, Processors, Mother boards, Printed circuit boards
STATISTICS OF INDIA!!
- There is an estimate that the total obsolete computers originating from government offices, business houses, industries and household is of the order of 2 million nos.
- India generates about 1,46,180 tons of E-waste every year.
- This is contributed by both house holds and corporate houses.
- Due to the lack of governmental legislation on e-waste, standards for disposal, proper mechanism for handling these toxic hi-tech products, mostly end up in landfills or partly recycled in a unhygienic conditions and partly thrown into waste streams.
- Computer waste is generated from the individual households; the government, public and private sectors; computer retailers; manufacturers; foreign embassies; secondary markets of old PCs.
- Of these, the biggest source of PC scrap are foreign countries that export huge computer waste in the form of reusable components.
OUR STRATEGY!!
- SANKALAN and I-DREAM team will work towards minimizing the excess carbon emissions during the fest.
- Laptops will be used throughout the fest as they consume less energy compared to a desktop computers.
- An event named "E-WASTE CONVERTOZZ!!" has been included this year to specifically make the youth aware of the implications of E-WASTE.
- Through this event participants can use their creativity and design a model out of e-waste lying un-utilised in their home or institute.
- This will result in collection of E-WASTE from houses and institutions to some extent.
- The collected E-WASTE will be given for recycling.
WHY RECYCLE!!!
- Recycling raw materials from end-of-life electronics is the most effective solution to the growing e-waste problem.
- Most electronic devices contain a variety of materials, including metals that can be recovered for future uses. By dismantling and providing reuse possibilities, intact natural resources are conserved and air and water pollution caused by hazardous disposal is avoided.
- Additionally, recycling reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the manufacturing of new products.
It simply makes good sense and is efficient to recycle and to do our part to keep the environment green.
"WE ARE DOING OUR BIT...ARE YOU DOING YOURS??"
We hope the participants will be supportive and help in making this initiative towards reducing E-WASTE a huge success.

nice initiative taken up by the department students... juz a query, that can anyone submit the e-waste in whatever form it is there or is it restricted for participants only and have to be submitted in some presentable form only??
ReplyDeleteIt is an open event, as in if you do not want to participate, you can submit the e-waste without transforming it into a design. We surely appreciate that aswell as you contributed to this initiative. But,if you have some great ideas on your mind to transform e-waste into a design, we expect you to participate in the event "E-WASTE CONVERTOZZ!!"
ReplyDeletei just wanna to ask if i have many e-waste related material but don't have an any innovative idea to make something using it, so where should i dispose it in order to make our environment greener ?
ReplyDeleteCreating social awareness at a tech-fast is an enthralling concept. :-)
ReplyDeleteIts a treat to see that the socio-aware initiative taken last year is being adopted as a practice. Hope it makes a difference.
All the best. Way to go guys !! :-)
Hello Disha, if you do not have any innovative idea then you can submit the e-waste to us. Get the e-waste on 5th March, Day 1 of Sankalan.
ReplyDeleteA great move.......any kind of contribution needed ready to help....after 5 march how things will reach to you?
